Having family in the same organisation could be a challenge. Husband-wife working together. Brother-sister working together. However, it's more concerning when it turns into nepotistic behaviour.

Recently, someone asked me this question in my Masterclass, hence this article.

Question:
"Why is there nepotism within corporate, and how do we overcome this with mettle and handle public communication and presentation before senior management with confidence."

I have been lucky enough to face Nepotism; however, not to that extent. Why lucky? I can share some tips or clues for you to look out for and be aware of.

Why is there Nepotism within the company?

Nepotism can occur in any corporation wherein the ones in power can favour their household or near pals by imparting their jobs or promotions. This may be because of many motives, such as agreeing with loyalty or retaining management inside the organization. However, it can also result in a loss of diversity and can demotivate different employees who experience the fact that they’re no longer given identical opportunities.

However, as a Confident Corporate Communicator, you may meet this undertaking with powerful verbal exchange techniques and a version of professionalism.

How do we conquer this with mettle?

Meritocracy: Strive to excel in your function. Your talents, understanding, and painting ethic could make you stand out. One of the foundations of my program is CCC — Core skills + Communication = Confidence. We need individuals to know about their core skills and confidently share them with others.

Networking: Build sturdy expert relationships vertically and horizontally across different departments. This can boost your visibility within the organisation. Dropping your ego and connecting with people goes a long way. However, being assertive when required.

Continuous Learning: If you stop learning, you stop growing. Keep updating your skills and know-how. This makes you a precious asset to the company and can open up new opportunities. Learning starts after graduation. Until graduation you learn about technical skills; life learning starts when you deal with things like Nepotism, Office Politics and more.

Handling public verbal exchange and presentation before senior control with self-assurance:

Preparation: Understand your audience and tailor your message for this reason. Anticipate questions and prepare concise responses. Stakeholder management is the key to any organization and your reason for success or failure.

Clarity and Conciseness: Senior management like direct and to-the-point communication. Lack of fuss and beating around the bush, yeah — they don’t like it. Be clear and concise in your presentation. However, ensure that your choice of words is placed carefully. It’s important to be short; however, you can story-tell even in 90 secs.

Body Language: Maintain eye contact and use open body language. This can bring self-assurance and engagement. I can ramble a lot here; however, grab my Book-Corporate Circus and go to Chapter 3 (page 27 to page 37), and you will find all the necessary information on Body language, including posture, gestures, hand movements and more.

Practice: The more you practice, the more comfortable you will become. This can significantly enhance your self-belief. Remember, Confidence cannot come overnight. When you practice (& we help in practising), you develop a habit that soon becomes second nature. In 3–4 months, you will find a confident communicator who knows how to handle Nepotism and more.

Remember, each company is different, and those are preferred pointers. It’s crucial to recognize and navigate your business enterprise's particular dynamics. Hope this facilitates!
